Artist Statement

The sculpture collection reflects my perception of the short story The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. When reading the story, I felt a sense of sadness and pity, in the story a man who has worked very hard to help his family has turned into an insect, and his family treats him like a monster. I made a connection with the metamorphosis to the movie silence of the lambs where the man who wants to be a woman is obsessed with insects because of their ability to change, which influenced my imagination when reading the story. I imagined that Gregor's family lived in a rainy section of London in a small run-down apartment as the story went on. I felt dark and warm colors when reading the story, the textures were sharp and worn out, with a lot of wood. The patterns of the story were dark and floral, and the shapes are squares for the use of order within the story. The focal point is when Gregor is killed, he had spent his entire life trying to help his family and in the end, they killed him.
